This city packs a lot of history on each meter square. However information is fragmented and there are few official guiding pages to tell the story. Yet Palermo is very rich and beautiful and for this reason it should be well known.

As the writers of wearepalermo.com pointed out, the Tram doesn't go through the Old Town and only runs in the suburbs. If the aim is to visit the old town then it's unlikely trams will be the chosen mode of transport. However they are useful if the accomodation is near a tram stop and the line connects to the central station.

Tickets are €1.40.

The Metro is also not ideal for tourists as it does not cover the old town.It is however a good alternative to bus if going to Mondello Beach- the most beautiful and popular beach in the area.
There is no official website for the metro.Locals tell us it runs every 30 minutes between 5am and 10.30pm.

Tickets are €1.40.

Cycle

Cycling can be an adventure in Palermo and Italy in general. Ranging from angry drivers to congested traffic, wearepalermo.com does not recommend using a bike because of high risk or accidents. Wearing high visibility clothing can help one be more visible but it's quite risky and even cycle lanes are not always safe as motorscooters and angry people may get in the way.

For those who really want a bicycle no matter what, the following are recommended:

  • Social bike. Discesa dei Giudici, 21 (View here on Google Maps)
  • Velotourent. Via Francesco Crispi, 86 (View here on Google Maps)

Another option is to use the bike sharins scheme BiciPa which has cycle docks all around the city. Make sure to download the app to find the location of the docking station

A good place to cycle around is along the waterfront in the afternoon. There are no cars and it's a perfect opportunity to visit the port.
